W.P.M.C. regional racing, Round 4: race report
Cold, grey and rainy conditions greeted competitors and fans for the fourth round of the Western Province regional championship at Killarney, with conditions complicated by dry patches...
Aran “Captain Vantastic” van Niekerk (Kawasaki ZX10R, Class A) made no mistakes and claimed victory in a wet Race 1 of the Mike Hopkins Motorcycles Superbikes A, B and C class, well clear of erstwhile leader Ronald “Red Baron” Slamet (Kawasaki ZX10R, Class A), who dropped his machine at Engen corner in the closing stages of the race. Gerrit “Red Rocket” Visser (Honda CBR1000RR, Class A) staved off the intentions of Zane Simon (Kawasaki ZX10, Class A) and Tyron Simon (Kawasaki ZX10, Class A) to claim the final podium position, despite breaking a steering damper after a tank-slapper at the exit of Malmesbury! Sharl Wasserfal (Kawasaki ZX6R, Class A) rode superbly to stave off Nick van der Walt (Honda CBR600RR, Class A) and claim victory in the 600cc class. Andre Calvert (Kawasaki ZX6R) took victory in Class B, while Andries Coetzee (Yamaha R6) won Class C. Van Niekerk and Slamet broke away from the pack in Race 2, but Slamet couldn’t match van Niekerk’s blistering pace and he had to settle for second place. Wasserfal took a superb podium, being the first 600cc rider home, ahead of Tyron Simon and Chris Williams (Kawasaki ZX10R, Class A). Calvert, again, took victory in Class B, while Coetzee took a double victory in Class C. Wasserfal’s exploits earned him the Rider of the Day trophy.
Warren Guantario (Suzuki SV650 – Powersport A) took victory in Race 1 of the Mike Hopkins Motorcycles Powersport/Clubman/Classics class, following the race stoppage as a result of a fall by Hayden Jonas (Honda VFR400, Powersport B) at Malmesbury. Graeme Greene (Suzuki SV650, Powersport A) fell from the lead at the exit of Engen, but managed to continue and finish second when the race was stopped for a second time following a fall by Brandon Storey (Suzuki SV650 – Powersport A). J-P Frederich (Honda FVR400) took Powersport B honours with Alan Kessell (Honda FVR400) shadowing him across the line, despite Kessell’s cowboy move on his rival at Malmesbury, powering around the outside of Frederich to lead down the back straight mid-race! Wessel Kruger (Honda CBR600 F3) won the Clubmans class from a returning Norman McFadden (BMW F800). Greene turned the tables in Race 2, winning comfortably ahead of Guantario, while Kruger finished a lonely third. Liebenberg finished fourth, with Storey leading a trio of machines consisting of Kessell, John Kosterman (Suzuki GSXR750, Classics) and Frederich. Carl Liebenberg (Kawasaki ER6, Powersport A) did not make it to race day, as he was sidelined when he broke his femur in a violent accident in a practice session the previous afternoon.
